What makes this card Islamic

Islami Bank Bangladesh builds this card on a Ujrah contract. The bank charges you a fixed fee for the service of giving you a card, rather than a charge that grows with the money you owe.

The bank describes the card verbatim as 'A Shariah Compliant Card Based on "Ujrah Concept" (fixed fee based concept)'. This is a TRUE REVOLVING CREDIT CARD, not a charge card — the fee table prices a 'Monthly Maintenance Fee (if outstanding balance remains over Tk.100)', which expressly contemplates a balance being carried from month to month. Critically, IBBL charges NO percentage profit rate at all: the cost of carrying a balance is a FLAT monthly fee (ujrah) in taka, not a rate applied to the outstanding amount. This is the purest ujrah implementation found in either Pakistan or Bangladesh and is structurally different from EXIM Bank (25% p.a. Bai-Murabaha) and Social Islami Bank (2% per month).

Approved by Shari'ah Supervisory Committee of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC, under the supervision of Bangladesh Bank.

What it costs

Every figure below comes from Islami Bank Bangladesh’s own published documents. Where the bank does not publish a number we say so rather than estimate it.

Annual fee
Tk 1,500Annual fee will be waived for a minimum of 18 POS/e-commerce transactions, or Tk. 100,000 of POS/e-commerce purchases, yearly.source
Profit rate
Not publishedNO PERCENTAGE PROFIT RATE IS CHARGED OR PUBLISHED. Under the ujrah model the carrying cost is a flat 'Monthly Maintenance Fee (if outstanding balance remains over Tk.100)' of Tk. 1,000 (Gold 1) or Tk. 1,500 (Gold 2). Because the fee is flat rather than proportional, the EFFECTIVE cost of credit falls as the balance rises and is punitive on small balances — see watch_outs. A 'Charge Free' facility of up to 45 days applies. The minimum monthly payment percentage is NOT published by the bank on any page fetched.
Cash withdrawal
Tk. 200 per ATM/CRM cash withdrawal transaction. Cash withdrawal is permitted up to 50% of the sanctioned limit.
Late payment
Tk 500
Over limit
Tk 500
Replacement card
Tk 300

  • Bills payable through Cellfin, mCash, internet banking, CRM and any branch or sub-branch

Before you apply

  • THE FLAT FEE IS THE TRAP. The Tk. 1,000-1,500 monthly maintenance fee applies to ANY outstanding balance above Tk. 100. Carrying a small balance is therefore extremely expensive in effective terms, while carrying a large one is comparatively cheap. This is the inverse of a percentage profit rate and is easy to misread.
  • No minimum-payment percentage is published anywhere on the bank's site, so a borrower cannot work out their obligation before applying.
  • The bank's official Schedule of Charges (Annexure-D, Digital Banking) is published as a SCANNED IMAGE with no text layer, so the fee figures here come from the HTML product pages rather than the regulatory fee document.
  • You cannot hold this card if you already have more than 2 credit cards from other banks or financial institutions.
  • 15% VAT is applied on top of every fee and charge.
  • No foreign-transaction / FX markup line is published; this is not proof that none is charged.

What we could not verify

Islami Bank Bangladesh does not publish monthly profit rate, annual profit rate, supplementary card fee, foreign currency markup, takaful cover, documents required, reward caps, terms and conditions for this card, so we have left those blank rather than guess. If you need one of them, ask the bank directly and hold them to the answer in writing.
