What makes this card Islamic

Standard Chartered Saadiq builds this card on a Ujrah contract. The bank charges you a fixed fee for the service of giving you a card, rather than a charge that grows with the money you owe.

UJRAH, with a SERVICE ACCOUNT mechanic that is the most elegant Shariah design in this entire dataset and is worth understanding. The bank names the mode in its own FAQ: 'Our Saadiq Credit card is based on the concept of "Ujrah". "Ujrah" is an Arabic word which means "fee". In Saadiq credit card, we have a monthly maintenance fee.' The clever part is what happens to a carried balance. The Card Agreement defines a '"Service Account" ... the NON-INTEREST AND NON-PROFIT BEARING account which is maintained by the Bank for the Cardholder, into which any amount of the Current Balance which is due and unpaid after the relevant Payment Due Date, is transferred from the Card Account'. Any unpaid balance is automatically moved there on the working day after the due date, so THE CARRIED BALANCE ITSELF NEVER ACCRUES PROFIT — the bank's income is the monthly Ujrah/maintenance fee instead, which the Agreement says is charged 'for the following Services: Maintenance of the Service Account / Continued usage of the Card / Benefits and privileges offered on the card'. The Agreement goes further and expressly disclaims profit altogether: '21. WAIVER OF INTEREST — The parties recognise and agree that the principle of the payment of profit is repugnant to Shariah principles and accordingly ... the parties hereby irrevocably, unconditionally and expressly waive and reject any entitlement to recover profit from each other.' TRUE REVOLVING CREDIT CARD: 'The Cardholder may choose not to settle the Current Balance in full, in which case the Cardholder must pay the Minimum Amount Due no later than the Payment Due Date.' SEPARATE PRODUCT, NOT A REBADGE — the Saadiq range has its own Schedule of Charges, its own Credit Card Agreement, and a fee structure with no interest or profit line at all; the conventional SC Bangladesh range sits on a separate consolidated schedule.

Approved by Standard Chartered Bangladesh Shariah Supervisory Committee, under the supervision of Bangladesh Bank.

What it costs

Every figure below comes from Standard Chartered Saadiq’s own published documents. Where the bank does not publish a number we say so rather than estimate it.

Annual fee
Tk 5,000Primary card. Government excise duty applies as per government regulations.source
Supplementary card
Tk 0First and second supplementary cards are free; BDT 1000 for the third and onwards.source
Profit rate
Not publishedNO PROFIT RATE EXISTS ON THIS CARD, AND THE AGREEMENT EXPRESSLY WAIVES ONE. A carried balance is moved into a non-interest, non-profit-bearing Service Account, so it accrues nothing. The bank's income is a 'Monthly maintenance fee (only payable if there is any outstanding amount)' with a published MAXIMUM of BDT 8,300 for this tier — the actual monthly charge is at the bank's discretion within that cap and may be waived entirely. Payment due date is 15 days from the statement date; no profit-free or grace period is published.
Cash withdrawal
Cash advance processing fee BDT 300. Cash advance limit up to 50% of the credit limit. Transferring funds from the card to a mobile wallet through online banking or the SC Mobile Bangladesh app is treated as a cash advance and incurs this fee; loading a wallet through a wallet portal costs 1% of the transaction instead.
Late payment
Tk 500BDT 500 if the minimum due is not paid by the due date — and it is costs-based, with any surplus over the bank's actual direct costs donated to a charitable cause approved by the Shariah supervisory committee.
Over limit
Tk 1,000
Foreign currency spend
3% on top of the exchange rate
Replacement card
Tk 1,000

  • Free passenger handling service for up to 2 persons

  • 360 Reward: 1 reward point per BDT 50 of retail spend
  • Insta Buys: instalments at no added cost for tenors up to 36 months

Before you apply

  • The monthly maintenance fee figures published are MAXIMA, not fixed charges: the footnote reads 'Maximum monthly maintenance fee. Bank will follow relevant regulatory guideline applicable for charging maintenance fee.' The FAQ adds that the bank 'can waive the monthly maintenance fee as per its discretion', and the Agreement says the fee 'will only be charged, and appear in the card statement, for the month the bank decides not to waive'. So what you actually pay each month is at the bank's discretion, within that cap.
  • The payment due date is only 15 days from the statement date, and no profit-free or grace period is published at all.
  • Late payment is charged on a COSTS basis with the surplus given away — a genuinely Shariah-compliant design worth knowing about: 'a late payment charge will be moved, calculated on the estimated direct costs which shall be incurred by the Bank ... Any amounts of the late payment charges which is in excess of the actual direct costs incurred shall be donated to a charitable cause approved by the Bank's Shariah supervisory committee.'
  • Card cheques cost 3% of the amount, minimum BDT 500 — expensive.
  • 3% on all international transactions, and international use runs off your Travel Quota limit.
  • The Balance Transfer Facility can be used ONCE in the entire lifetime of the card.
  • An unusual travel clause: 'Should the Cardholder be away from Bangladesh for more than a month, the Card Acount should be settled 7 days prior to departure.'
  • Prohibited use is contractual, not advisory: purchases of alcohol, pork products, gambling and pornography are prohibited, the bank may refuse to honour such a transaction, and it 'holds the right to suspend and / or terminate the Credit Card Services in case of any breach'.
  • PHANTOM TIER: the Schedule of Charges prices a third card, the 'Saadiq Green Credit Card' (BDT 1,500 annual fee, BDT 1,200 maximum monthly maintenance fee), in full — but it appears on NO web page and in no navigation. Do not treat it as a live product without further evidence.

What we could not verify

Standard Chartered Saadiq does not publish monthly profit rate, annual profit rate, minimum income, maximum age, takaful cover, reward caps for this card, so we have left those blank rather than guess. If you need one of them, ask the bank directly and hold them to the answer in writing.
