What makes this card Islamic

Al Hilal Bank builds this card on a Tawarruq contract. The bank sells you a commodity on credit at a marked-up price, you sell that commodity to somebody else for cash, and the cash becomes your spending limit.

Al Hilal Bank's Internal Shariah Supervision Committee issues a 'Shariah Compliance Certificate … For “Covered Credit Card” Based on Tawarruq'. The bank sells a commodity to the customer under a Master Murabaha Agreement, the commodity is sold on spot to a third party for the customer's benefit, and the sale proceeds are deposited into a **special saving account** as security. The customer may use those proceeds only through the credit card. If the balance is not used, the bank invests it and at period end **sets off the Murabaha profit the customer owes against the Mudaraba profit the bank owes on the special saving account**; the bank then, at its sole discretion, waives its right to any excess Murabaha profit and credits any excess Mudaraba profit to the customer.

Approved by Internal Shariah Supervision Committee, under the supervision of Central Bank of the UAE (and the Securities and Commodities Authority under licence 601035, for promotion activity).

What you get back

  • Choose TWO categories for the bonus rate from: grocery/supermarket, fuel/service stations, international purchases, restaurants, education
  • The bonus rate is tiered by total monthly retail spend: AED 0-3,000 earns 1% on the chosen categories; AED 3,000.01-8,000 earns 3%; above AED 8,000 earns 5%
  • 1% cashback on all other retail purchases
  • No cashback at all on government transactions or on utility bill payments made through the Al Hilal Digital app
  • All purchases at any merchant in the European Economic Area earn 1% only, regardless of the category chosen
  • No minimum spend is required to earn cashback

The cap is the part that matters

AED 250 per month in each of the two chosen 5% categories, and AED 500 maximum cashback per statement period in total. Cashback is credited as a single payment against the primary card's outstanding balance on or before the 15th of the following month; it cannot be taken as cash or vouchers.

Other benefits

  • Free for life — no annual fee
  • Complimentary airport lounge access to over 25 lounges worldwide
  • Buy-one-get-one-free on dining, premium spas and leisure activities
  • Free card replacement / reissuance
  • Categories can be changed once a month in the Al Hilal app; free twice a year
  • Mastercard Priceless benefits

Before you apply

  • Al Hilal prices new customers higher than existing ones on the same card: 3.25% a month for cards issued on or before 31 December 2023 and 3.69% a month for cards issued from 1 January 2024.
  • The profit-free period is discretionary: the Schedule of Fees says no Murabaha profit is levied on a full settlement 'at the bank's sole discretion'.
  • The 3.14% exchange markup also applies to AED transactions performed OUTSIDE the UAE, not just foreign-currency ones.
  • Cash withdrawal is limited to 60% of the card limit and costs 3.15%.
  • The advertised 5% is only paid if total monthly retail spend exceeds AED 8,000. Between AED 3,000.01 and AED 8,000 it drops to 3%, and below AED 3,000 it drops to 1% — the same as everything else.
  • Each bonus category is capped at AED 250 a month and total cashback at AED 500 a statement period.
  • European Economic Area purchases are explicitly excluded from the 'international purchases' bonus category and earn 1%.
  • Government spend and app-based utility bill payments earn nothing.
  • Changing your chosen categories costs AED 25 from the third change in a year.
  • Dining offers exclude items prohibited under Shariah such as alcohol, tobacco and shisha.
