What makes this card Islamic

Al Hilal Bank builds this card on a Tawarruq contract. The bank sells you a commodity on credit at a marked-up price, you sell that commodity to somebody else for cash, and the cash becomes your spending limit.

Al Hilal Bank's Internal Shariah Supervision Committee issues a 'Shariah Compliance Certificate … For “Covered Credit Card” Based on Tawarruq'. The bank sells a commodity to the customer under a Master Murabaha Agreement, the commodity is sold on spot to a third party for the customer's benefit, and the sale proceeds are deposited into a **special saving account** as security. The customer may use those proceeds only through the credit card. If the balance is not used, the bank invests it and at period end **sets off the Murabaha profit the customer owes against the Mudaraba profit the bank owes on the special saving account**; the bank then, at its sole discretion, waives its right to any excess Murabaha profit and credits any excess Mudaraba profit to the customer.

Approved by Internal Shariah Supervision Committee, under the supervision of Central Bank of the UAE (and the Securities and Commodities Authority under licence 601035, for promotion activity).

What you get back

Other benefits

  • Bonus Joud Reward Points (on the fee-paying version)
  • VIP terminal access (on the fee-paying version)

Before you apply

  • Al Hilal prices new customers higher than existing ones on the same card: 3.25% a month for cards issued on or before 31 December 2023 and 3.69% a month for cards issued from 1 January 2024.
  • The profit-free period is discretionary: the Schedule of Fees says no Murabaha profit is levied on a full settlement 'at the bank's sole discretion'.
  • The 3.14% exchange markup also applies to AED transactions performed OUTSIDE the UAE, not just foreign-currency ones.
  • Cash withdrawal is limited to 60% of the card limit and costs 3.15%.
  • Legacy product: Al Hilal lists this on its 'Legacy Cards' page, so it is no longer offered to new applicants, although its fees remain in the current Schedule of Fees.
  • At AED 2,625 a year it is by far the most expensive card in this research set, and the fee waiver needs AED 150,000 of annual spend.
