What makes this card Islamic

Al Hilal Bank builds this card on a Tawarruq contract. The bank sells you a commodity on credit at a marked-up price, you sell that commodity to somebody else for cash, and the cash becomes your spending limit.

Al Hilal Bank's Internal Shariah Supervision Committee issues a 'Shariah Compliance Certificate … For “Covered Credit Card” Based on Tawarruq'. The bank sells a commodity to the customer under a Master Murabaha Agreement, the commodity is sold on spot to a third party for the customer's benefit, and the sale proceeds are deposited into a **special saving account** as security. The customer may use those proceeds only through the credit card. If the balance is not used, the bank invests it and at period end **sets off the Murabaha profit the customer owes against the Mudaraba profit the bank owes on the special saving account**; the bank then, at its sole discretion, waives its right to any excess Murabaha profit and credits any excess Mudaraba profit to the customer.

Approved by Internal Shariah Supervision Committee, under the supervision of Central Bank of the UAE (and the Securities and Commodities Authority under licence 601035, for promotion activity).

Before you apply

  • Al Hilal prices new customers higher than existing ones on the same card: 3.25% a month for cards issued on or before 31 December 2023 and 3.69% a month for cards issued from 1 January 2024.
  • The profit-free period is discretionary: the Schedule of Fees says no Murabaha profit is levied on a full settlement 'at the bank's sole discretion'.
  • The 3.14% exchange markup also applies to AED transactions performed OUTSIDE the UAE, not just foreign-currency ones.
  • Cash withdrawal is limited to 60% of the card limit and costs 3.15%.
  • The Etihad Guest co-brand has no live product page. Al Hilal's World Mastercard fee table refers throughout to 'migrated Etihad Guest cards', which indicates existing Etihad Guest cardholders were moved onto the World Mastercard. Treat availability to new applicants as unconfirmed.
  • The bank's Credit Cards page still carries the browser title 'Etihad Guest & Cashback Cards In UAE' while listing neither Etihad Guest card — a stale title, not evidence the product is sold.
  • No Etihad Guest miles earn rates are published anywhere on Al Hilal Bank's current site.

Can you get it?

Other conditions
The three Etihad Guest tiers still have a full fee table in Al Hilal Bank's Schedule of Fees (V3.7, June 2026) but no product page. The bank's own Credit Cards page lists only the Cashback and World Mastercard cards, and the World Mastercard fee table is written entirely in terms of 'migrated Etihad Guest cards' — strong evidence the co-brand was migrated. Status recorded as 'unknown' rather than 'discontinued' because no withdrawal notice was found. Minimum amount due 5% of statement balance or AED 100, whichever is higher. 25 days from statement date to payment due date. Maximum profit-free period up to 55 days on retail transactions only. Cash withdrawal limit 60% of the card limit.
