What makes this card Islamic

HSBC Amanah Malaysia Berhad builds this card on a Ujrah contract. The bank charges you a fixed fee for the service of giving you a card, rather than a charge that grows with the money you owe.

HSBC Amanah's PDS states the product plainly as an ujrah (service fee) card: 'This is a Credit Card-i which the cardholder will be utilising HSBC Amanah's services and facilities and therefore pays service fee (ujrah) for it.' No bai' al-inah and no tawarruq is named for the card itself in the PDS. Separately, HSBC Amanah's own marketing describes Murabahah via a Tawarruq arrangement with HSBC Amanah Malaysia Berhad as the cardholder's sole and exclusive agent — that description could not be confirmed on the card PDS during this pass and is recorded as UNRESOLVED rather than merged into the structure field. Ujrah for cards was permitted by the BNM SAC at its 77th (3 July 2008) and 78th (30 July 2008) meetings and remains one of only two approved concepts under BNM/RH/PD 028-141 para 10.

Approved by Shariah Committee of HSBC Amanah Malaysia Berhad, under the supervision of Bank Negara Malaysia.

What it costs

Every figure below comes from HSBC Amanah Malaysia Berhad’s own published documents. Where the bank does not publish a number we say so rather than estimate it.

Annual fee
RM 90Marketing on the product page states 'Enjoy a lifetime annual fee waiver when you apply' — a campaign waiver, not the contractual fee. Waived entirely for cards converted from Amanah Advance Visa Platinum.source
Supplementary card
RM 45Supplementary card, per annumsource
Profit rate
15% a yearThis is the clearest CEILING-vs-EFFECTIVE structure found in the Malaysian market and it is expressed in RINGGIT, not a percentage. The contractual ceiling is a Fixed Monthly Management Fee of RM1,125 per month against a Maximum Credit Limit of RM75,000. The bank then rebates down to the Actual Monthly Management Fee, 'a fee based on the actual usage of the card', tiered on payment record: Purchases 15.0% p.a. (Tier 1, prompt payments for 12 consecutive months), 17.0% p.a. (Tier 2, prompt payments for 10 months or more in the last 12), 18.0% p.a. (Tier 3, all other cardholders). Cash Advance 18.0% p.a. of the balance accrued, calculated daily. Balance Transfer, Cash Instalment Plan, Auto Balance Conversion and Balance Conversion Plan each up to 18.0% p.a. DERIVED, NOT QUOTED: RM1,125/month on a RM75,000 limit is arithmetically 18% p.a. of the maximum limit — the bank does not itself state that identity, so it is flagged as an inference and the ceiling percentage field is left null. The PDS words the rebate as discretionary: 'The Bank at its absolute discretion may grant a rebate on the difference between the Fixed Monthly Management Fee and the Actual Monthly Management Fee'.source
Cash withdrawal
'A charge of RM50 will be charged for every RM1,000 of cash advance.' Cash Instalment Plan: 2% of the amount approved for each plan under RM5,000.
Late payment
RM 100Compensation Fee: 'Minimum of RM10 or 1% of the outstanding balance, whichever is higher, up to a maximum of RM100.'
Foreign currency spend
1% on top of the exchange rate
Replacement card
RM 50

What you get back

Other benefits

  • 20 days management-fee free on all transactions except Balance Transfer and Cash Advance, provided the previous month's statement balance is settled in full
  • Auto Balance Conversion programme for cardholders with annual income of RM60,000 or less and a payment ratio of 10% or less over the last 12 months

Before you apply

  • Service tax of RM25 per annum is charged on every principal AND every supplementary card — passed on, not absorbed.
  • Cash advance costs RM50 per RM1,000 drawn (5%) on top of 18% p.a. from day one, with no fee-free period.
  • The rebate from the RM1,125 Fixed Monthly Management Fee down to the Actual Monthly Management Fee is stated as being at the Bank's 'absolute discretion'.
  • The Product Disclosure Sheet located is dated 2019. The current PDS at https://www.hsbcamanah.com.my/content/dam/hsbc/hbms/documents/credit-cards/credit-card-product-disclosure.pdf is an image-only PDF with no extractable text, so figures could not be re-verified against it — treat all figures as as-at-2019 unless re-checked.

Age
21 and over
Other conditions
Product page states 'A minimum annual income of RM 24,000 p.a. is required' — the BNM statutory floor, so this card sits at the entry point of the Malaysian market. 'Primary cardholder must be at least 21 years of age; supplementary cardholder must be at least 18 years old.' Annual figure not divided into a monthly one, per the no-inference rule.
