Makruh

Disliked but not forbidden: better avoided, no sin if you do it.

مكروهmakrūh

Makruh sits between permitted and forbidden. It matters in card debates because several scholars place structures like organised tawarruq here rather than in outright prohibition. AAOIFI's tawarruq standard notes that Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim considered monetization 'as prohibited or worthy of aversion', that second phrase being the makruh category. So when a scholar says a card is 'not recommended' rather than 'forbidden', that is a real technical position and not a soft refusal to answer.
