Mushtabah

Doubtful: a grey area where the ruling is unclear, which cautious people avoid.

مشتبهmushtabah

Mushtabah, also written syubhah, means doubtful matters that fall between the clearly lawful and the clearly unlawful. The classical guidance is to avoid them to protect one's religion. It appears in regulator language, not just sermons: Bank Negara's SAC preferred that takaful cover be given as a gift on a card rather than sold for a fee 'in order to avoid syubhah associated with the prohibition of exchanging cash with cash at different values'. For a cardholder, a product certified as compliant but sitting in a contested structure is a mushtabah question, not a settled one.
