Glossary

Halal

Permitted under Islamic law.

حلالḥalāl

Halal means lawful. Applied to a card it has two levels: whether the card's own structure is lawful, and whether what you buy with it is. DSN-MUI's card fatwa makes the second an express condition of compliance, requiring that the card not be used for transactions that do not accord with Shariah, and AAOIFI Shariah Standard No. 2 clause 3/2/3 requires the issuer to stipulate that the card is not used for prohibited purposes and to be able to withdraw the card if that condition is broken.
