Glossary

Israf

Wasteful overspending, which Islamic law treats as wrong in itself.

إسرافisrāf

Israf means extravagance or squandering. It is unusual among the terms here because it is a rule about the cardholder's behaviour rather than the bank's contract, and because one regulator has made it a condition of product compliance. DSN-MUI Fatwa No. 54 requires that a Syariah Card must not encourage excessive spending, including by setting a maximum spending ceiling, and separately requires that the principal cardholder have the financial ability to settle on time. On that view a card designed to maximise your borrowing fails on religious grounds even if every contract in it is sound.
