What makes this card Islamic

Standard Bank builds this card on a Qard Hasan + Ujrah contract. The bank lends you the money and you pay back exactly what you borrowed, not a penny more.

The Shari'ah Advisory Committee certificate states the product is 'structured on the principle of Qardh' — an interest-free loan. The bank's income is the flat card fee (an ujrah-style service fee), not a financing charge. The published fee schedule confirms this: the line 'Islamic Financing Rate' carries the value '-' (nil) in both the 2025 and 2026 guides, i.e. there is no profit rate at all. The schema enum 'Qard Hasan + Ujrah' is used as the closest fit; the certificate itself names only Qardh.

What it costs

Every figure below comes from Standard Bank’s own published documents. Where the bank does not publish a number we say so rather than estimate it.

Annual fee
R 142FREE for Standard Bank Prestige Plus, Private Banking Bundled, and Wealth and Investment clients.source
Supplementary card
R 39'Add on Cards' — R39.00 (2026). Footnoted '*only applicable to new cards issued as of 1 January 2022'.source
Profit rate
Not publishedThere is no profit rate. The published fee schedule line 'Islamic Financing Rate' shows '-' (nil) for both 2025 and 2026. This is structurally consistent with a Qardh-based charge card settled in full each cycle.source
Cash withdrawal
Charged per R100 rather than as a flat amount or simple percentage. 2026: ATM Local Standard Bank R2.84 per R100.00; ATM Local non-Standard Bank R2.84 per R100.00; Branch Local Standard Bank R88.60 + R3.33 per R100.00; International 2% of value + R3.00 per R100.00; International over the counter 2% of value + R3.20 per R100.00.
Late payment
R 180Listed under 'OTHER FEES' as 'Late payment fee'. Unchanged between the 2025 and 2026 schedules.
Foreign currency spend
2% on top of the exchange rate

What you get back

  • ClubMiles earning rate: R8.00 of spend to obtain 1 mile (2026 schedule)
  • ClubMiles carries an optional monthly programme fee of R45.00 (2026)
  • Airport lounge access: one lounge visit earned for every R8 800 spent in a calendar quarter; unused visits carry to the next quarter but expire at year end

The cap is the part that matters

Lounge visits are earned per R8 800 quarterly spend and expire at the end of the calendar year if unused.

Other benefits

  • Certified Shari'ah compliant by Standard Bank's independent Shari'ah Advisory Committee on the principle of Qardh
  • No financing/profit rate at all — the 'Islamic Financing Rate' line is nil
  • Diners Club airport lounge access earned on quarterly spend; up to three children under 16 admitted to domestic lounges
  • Free concierge service
  • Travel services from premium partners, including bespoke Umrah packages
  • Accepted at Diners Club's international merchant network

Before you apply

  • It is a charge card. There is no revolving credit — you cannot carry a balance, so it does not substitute for a conventional credit card if you need to spread a cost.
  • A prior version of this card page cited a certificate dated 01/01/2024 that had lapsed on its own terms. Re-checked 2026-09-19: a current certificate exists, dated 01/01/2026, valid one year. It no longer names the contract in words, unlike the 2024 version.
  • Diners Club acceptance in South Africa and abroad is materially narrower than Visa or Mastercard.
  • The R142.00 'Primary Card' fee has no stated period on the source document — do not assume it is annual.
  • The Shari'ah committee endorses the card, but explicitly places responsibility on the client: benefits must be used within the constraints of Shari'ah.
  • A late payment fee of R180.00 still applies. Under a strict reading, a penalty on a Qardh is contentious; the pricing guide's separate 'CHARITABLE DONATION RATE' heading suggests a charity-routing mechanism but the primary source does not explain it.

What we could not verify

Standard Bank does not publish minimum income, minimum age, maximum age, documents required, terms and conditions, takaful cover, over-limit fee, annual fee periodicity for this card, so we have left those blank rather than guess. If you need one of them, ask the bank directly and hold them to the answer in writing.
